Before anyone says it, yes, I know I've been doing A LOT of Alice lately. This was a commission, so don't blame me!
My client wanted to add a little color to this one. I tried a few different types of pigment, but everything I used made the paper too fragile to use for the figures. I used watercolor for the flowers and leaves. I do like the contrast between the white figures and the bright flowers. I think they set each other off well.
About the fragility of the paper.
I do a lot of modeling, and sometimes have to use paper. Once I mold it in the shape I want, I spritz it with a dilute solution of white glue and water, LIGHTLY, over many (MANY) passes so as not to drench it. I lightly wet it and let it dry, a process that takes a few days for an almost plastic like texture that does not detract from the material beneath nor it's appearance. It is tedious, but results in a satisfactory piece.
