The Old Man and the Sea Book Sculpture by wetcanvas The Old Man and the Sea Book Sculpture by wetcanvas
Commissioned piece. The old man fights the marlin in the middle of the sea. There is a WIP close up of the fisherman if you'd like a closer look. The overall construction of this one is pretty simple so I tried to throw in as much detail to the figures as possible. The marlin's fins, scales and "face" are all separate pieces. As I said in the WIP, the fisherman's forehead, brows, eyelids, eyes, nose, lips, mustache, beard, and ears are all separate as well. I think the contrast between the wire and paper turned out pretty well. I think it has sort of a solid, binding feeling to it.

And I hate to say this, I really do, but I have been having some issues with people stealing my photos and saying my work is theirs or misrepresenting it in some way, so, this is my work. You may not use it without my permission. Please contact me before using it in any matter.

I don't normally condone chopping up books, but I have to say, this one is definitely worth the result!

Wonderful work. It would be so sad if you had to watermark your stuff but sometimes theft gets out of hand.

Thank you. I've talked with a lawyer and we've basically narrowed it down to people taking the photographs from Etsy, only one or two have come from DA. Honestly, I'm surprised.

I am wondering how you made that swordfish fly in mid-air.

Is it because of the fishing line?

Yes, the fishing line is supporting the marlin.

This is really masterful! The fact that it's so simple just shows how good you are... I completely agree with you on the *solid* feel the piece has, but there's also a great sense of movement, and I love the contrast of the wire and paper too. Overall, I love this whole piece! (in case you couldn't tell ;) ) :+fav:

Half of me- THE BEAUTIFUL BOOOOK WHYYYYYYY!?

Other half of me- It's so pretty and creative, you clearly put a lot of work into this.

I'm torn. I'm very torn.

I can understand. If it helps, I think of it as giving the book a new life. Unfortunately, paper books are being discarded in favor or E-readers. Personally, I refuse to make the switch but not many people do. Old books are being tossed in the trash and I'd rather make them into something new then see them rot.

.... Huh. That... is a nicer way to think of that. Thanks for clearing things up for me. Now I'm no longer torn- this is definitely beautiful and creative.

Normally I hate the idea of someone cutting up a book, but this is a great work of art, even if I never liked this particular story.
