Owl Book Sculpture by wetcanvas Owl Book Sculpture by wetcanvas
So this has been in the back of my mind for quite a while now. I have a bit of a fascination with owls and wanted to try to create one. The book used was a bird watching manual. I didn't think it would end up being so large, but she had a mind of her own. The wing span is about 40". Each feather has been individually cut and applied. The body feathers are made from migratory maps, the wings, head, and tail feathers are made from the bird identification illustrations. There is a wire coming from the crown of the head to hang her up. I think I spent about 10 hours working, not so sure, it's hard to keep track. I'm going to try to send her a local library for a fundraising event they've invited me to participate in. I'm not sure how that will go because this really isn't my typical work. Fingers crossed they'll like her as much as I do and she'll get a lot of bids for them.

Oh wow! That is a beautiful sculpture! I especially love the feathers!

Out of curiosity how delicate are the book sculptures that you create? Do you do anything to reinforce the paper or?

Thank you! I use cardboard and/or wire inside of the figures to reinforce them. The owl's body is made from card stock so it's light but the shape won't give.

That is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen done with paper. If they don't get a lot of bids, people just don't realize what went into that. Absolutely love it. If I had any money, I would bid myself.

Thank you so much! That means a lot. I'm a bit worried that you're right, people won't see just how much it took or just "not get it". I guess that's the way it goes though.

LOL, we just keep putting up shelves and buying more and more plastic tote boxes for storage. I think there will soon be a ban on making a new one until an old one sells. This one, being so large, is hanging from the bedroom ceiling. There wasn't much else I could do with her! I'm growing more attached to her, it's going to be hard to give it up!

WOW this is excellent! You're right, it's not your typical work, but I think it works better. Birds usually have connections to things like freedom and no attachments, so this concept works exceptionally well. Great work once again =) Probably one of my favorites of yours. I would say though, I think it would look better if you had more of an L pole so that the bird isn't pressed right up against the pole and has some room to move, but that may cause issues with the build, I am not sure.

Thank you! My original thought was to have it perched on the book with the wings closed. Once I got the body completed that idea just wasn't going to cut it. One of those circumstances where the artwork has a mind of its own. No worries, the pole it's one isn't a permanent thing. It was just the only thing I had on hand to hang the owl while working. Right now she's hanging from the ceiling. Free floating the body has more of a tilt so it looks more like she's soaring. So glad you like it!

Yeah having the wings outstretched really gives a sense of awe at the wingspan and is much better than if they were simply folded in. Ahh, ok that is good that she is more free floating and looks like she is soaring, she is a majestic bird after all and deserves to be in the sky =) Keep on making good work and good luck to you in your out-of-country experience whenever that may be!
